Trade turnover between Georgia and Russia continues to grow

In the period from January to June 2022, the trade turnover between Russia and Georgia amounted to $962 million, which is 32% more than the same period last year. This was reported by the government statistics agency Geostat.
The growth of trade between Georgia and the Russian Federation is notable for the fact that there are no diplomatic relations between the two countries. At the same time, Russia is in second place among Georgia’s partners with a share of 11.4% in the country’s total trade turnover. Turkey is still in first place — $1.2 billion for the first half of the year, which is 37% more than in January-June 2021.
From January to June, Georgia exported to Russia, among other things, about 40 thousand tons of ferroalloys worth more than $86 million, more than 21 thousand tons of wine worth $57 million, about 35 thousand tons of bottled water, and also re-exported cars to Russia worth $14 million. From Russia, Georgia imported about 200 thousand tons of oil products, about 77 thousand tons of wheat and wheat-rye flour, over 14.8 thousand tons of margarine.
Mikheil Saakashvili’s opposition United National Movement party has repeatedly accused the ruling Georgian Dream party and the government of Irakli Garibashvili of allegedly “helping Russia bypass Western sanctions” by allowing Moscow to use Georgia’s transit capabilities and masking the supply of authorized dual-use products to Russia . Similar claims to Tbilisi were previously made by Ukrainian politicians from the inner circle of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
