The Apple TV documentary Supermodels has begun airing, in which Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington look back on their modeling careers, how they changed the fashion landscape of the ’90s and defined what it meant to be a supermodel.

When they started (and this is the late 1980s – early 90s) there was no clear definition of the profession “model”, and there were no traces of “supermodels”, all participants in the fashion catwalk were called either clothing demonstrators or fashion models/mannequins. Today, the ubiquitous Wikipedia clearly explains that a “supermodel” is a model who has reached the highest professional level, has worldwide recognition, and earns the highest fees in the fashion industry. And today, for millions of people, regardless of whether they are interested in fashion or not, this word is understandable, and Cindy, Christy, Linda and Naomi are practically household names. “It wasn’t about fashion, it was about women—that’s what a supermodel is,” says the film’s trailer. “You see our photos and you feel like you know us,” says Naomi Campbell.

Supermodels, produced by Oscar winner Barbara Kopple and directed by Roger Ross Williams and Larissa Bills, begins by taking us back to the late 1980s, when the same foursome meet in New York City. beginner models. This is the start of their legendary career, a story of glory. Now that they are over 50 and already have children of their own, supermodels share not only photographs of their youth, but also openly talk about it. For example, before the era of fame, Christie looked after children and worked part-time as a cleaner, Linda was a saleswoman (and got out of bed for much less than $10,000, which she later declared so loudly), Naomi danced and struggled with various kinds of addictions, and Cindy experienced the death of her brother as a child – they all had difficult and not at all glamorous lives.

Each episode of the series has its own theme – “Look”, “Fame”, “Power” and “Legacy” and in addition to the models, we see a whole galaxy of designers who shaped them: Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, John Galliano, Donna Karan, Valentino , Karl Lagerfeld, Calvin Klein, Anna Sui and Isaac Mizrachi. But Naomi, Christie, Cindy and Linda were able to go beyond the modeling world, they were and remain attractive and influential, setting the stage for those very same “influencers” of today. This series is a kind of tribute to the golden era of modeling, recognition of an ephemeral profession as the basis of an entire industry, a saga of the strong in spirit and inspiration for everyone who is at the beginning of their journey.
