Tokayev announced early presidential elections in autumn 2022

The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, proposed holding early presidential elections in the republic in the fall of 2022. He stated this during his message to the people of Kazakhstan, broadcast led Tengrinews.kz portal.
“I propose to hold snap presidential elections this fall,” Tokayev said.
The President of Kazakhstan stressed that he puts the interests of the state above all, and therefore is ready to shorten his term of office. Tokayev also believes that the length of the presidential term should be changed. He proposed limiting it to seven years and forbidding re-election.
Earlier in his speech, Tokayev announced on an amnesty for participants in the January protests in Kazakhstan. He stated that the country “needs national unity,” but added that the decision would not affect terrorists, extremists, and those who tried to change power by force.
Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev became the President of Kazakhstan on March 20, 2019 after the announcement of the resignation of Nursultan Nazarbayev. Nazarbayev has headed the republic since 1990, he has held the presidency for almost 29 years.
According to articles 41-42 of the current Constitution of Kazakhstan, adopted in 1995, the president is elected for a term of five years and can hold this post for no more than two consecutive terms. In early June of this year, Tokayev announced that he was not going to extend his term of office by amending the country’s Constitution.
