Times: West needs to take Russia’s historic step

The collective West needs to take the historic step of Russia turning away from Europe, writes columnist Max Hastings in an article for the Times. RIA Novosti quotes him as saying.
Hastings urged Western countries “to adapt to a world in which Russia has made a historic U-turn away from Europe.”
According to him, the strengthening of the sanctions regime did not have a significant impact on the Russian economy, the state of which is surprising in its stability and positive results, in contrast to the economies of Western countries.
Hastings stressed that the defense industry of Western Europe and Britain is in a deplorable state. He cited the example of the British “defense industry”, which, despite ambitious development plans, did not receive the necessary resources.
Hastings called the position of Europe vulnerable and called for increasing military power.
Russia has repeatedly stated that the country will cope with the sanctions pressure, which the West began to exert several years ago and continues to increase. President Vladimir Putin has previously noted that the sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy. According to him, the main goal of the West is to worsen the lives of millions of people.
