New People’s Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) supported by many political forces organized march in Paris “against the high cost of living and the inaction of the authorities regarding the climate.” The organizers of the rally announced the participation of 140 thousand people. The police counted 30,000 demonstrators.
By the beginning of the march, activists from various social movements and even the new Nobel Prize winner Annie Erno had gathered in the Place de la Nation. The participants spoke about several theses. They want retirement at age 60, higher wages, price freezes, windfall taxation, and ecological bifurcation.
Still marching in Paris ended clashes with the police. At some point, radicals from the Black Bloc movement joined the peaceful protesters. They began to smash shop windows and banks, as well as throw bottles and smoke bombs at law enforcement officers. In response, the police fired tear gas.
