The value of the yen against the US dollar sank to its lowest level since August 1990. On Thursday, October 13, at the auction in Tokyo, its rate fell to ¥147.67 per dollar; today, October 14, the Japanese currency rose to ¥147.78 per dollar.
The fall of the Japanese yen was preceded by the publication of data on the consumer price index in the US, which in September rose more than expected – by 8.2%. Prior to the publication of these data, the yen held at ¥146.70 per dollar.
In general, since the beginning of this year, the yen has fallen in price against the dollar by almost 30%. In September, when there was a similar jump in the exchange rate, the Japanese authorities for the first time since 1998 were forced to intervene to support the national currency.
