Co-owner of Alfa-Bank Mikhail Fridman (until March 2022 – a member of the board of directors) announced his readiness to transfer the shares of the Ukrainian subsidiary of the bank to the government of Ukraine free of charge. He stressed that the co-owners of Alfa-Bank still consider private investment as the best option for distributing the shares of the Ukrainian branch, but do not object to the transfer of securities to state ownership.
“In our opinion, private investment is the best option… At the same time, if the government or the National Bank decides that Alfa-Bank Ukraine should be controlled by the state or another shareholder, we are ready to transfer the bank’s shares free of charge,”— said in a letter from Mr. Fridman to the head of the Ukrainian Central Bank, Andriy Pyshny, which is at the disposal of Interfax-Ukraine.
The banker explained that he considers the transfer of shares to the Ukrainian state to be loyal and responsible behavior “taking into account the investments necessary to restore the infrastructure of Ukraine.”
In early September, the Financial Times, citing sources informedthat Mikhail Fridman was negotiating with former US Chargé d’Affaires in Ukraine Christina Quinn on the removal of sanctions against him in exchange for financial assistance to Ukraine. Mr. Friedman denied this information.
