The White House is ready to compromise to get votes to help Ukraine

The administration of US President Joe Biden is ready for possible concessions on tightening immigration rules in order to gain support from Republicans in voting on a bill to allocate $61 billion in aid to Ukraine. According to Reuters, the White House is expected to review initial screening procedures for migrants applying for asylum. The administration will also consider implementing a “safe third country” provision that would allow the U.S. to deny asylum requests from migrants passing through other countries on their way to America.
An additional aspect of a possible deal with Republicans could be an expansion of the expedited deportation process, presumably to cover the entire country rather than just the borders, as is currently the case. It is also noted that the bipartisan group of senators working on the agreement is discussing the issue of quantitative restrictions on the number of asylum applications submitted, although the White House position on this issue remains uncertain.
Given the extremely tight deadline, it is believed that the White House and the Republican caucus are now aiming to agree on the basic principles of a new immigration policy, while specific details will be finalized at a later stage. With the House and Senate scheduled to adjourn by December 14, time is running out to pass legislation related to bailouts for Ukraine and Israel.
