FA: Ukraine after EU membership will become a “bastion against Russia”
Ukraine’s membership in the European Union (EU) will provide the political and financial basis for rebuilding the country. This was reported in an article for the magazine Foreign Affairs (FA), which quotes the words of ex-NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak.
“A prosperous Ukraine, which is part of the EU, can become a bastion against an autocratic and aggressive Russia,” the material says.
It is clarified that by joining the European Union, Kyiv will receive a new level of security due to Art. 42 of the EU Treaty, which states that if one of the members of the association is subjected to aggression from another state, other members of the European Union must provide support and assistance by all possible means.
According to Rasmussen and Ermak, the threat of direct response from EU members can be a powerful deterrent to guarantees for Kyiv, but this cannot become a full-fledged replacement for NATO membership.
