The volume of transit traffic along the NSR in 2023 reached a record 2.15 million tons

Rosatom General Director Alexey Likhachev said in an interview with the magazine “Expert”that in 2023 the volume of transit traffic along the Northern Sea Route reached a record 2.15 million tons. The total volume of cargo transported along the NSR also reached record levels last year and amounted to 36.25 million tons, which exceeded the planned figures by 250 thousand tons , added Mr. Likhachev.

The head of Rosatom said that foreign companies have growing interest in the Northern Sea Route. According to him, the number of permits for navigation in the NSR waters issued to foreign companies more than doubled in 2023. According to data for January, the state corporation is already recording an advance in cargo traffic indicators for the same period last year, the general director of Rosatom told Expert.

The Northern Sea Route is the shortest sea route from Europe to Asia. The NSR routes lie in the waters of the Arctic seas and the southern part of the Arctic Ocean within the exclusive economic zone of Russia in the Arctic. In December 2023, the representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Far Eastern Federal District, Yuri Trutnev statedthat the volume of transportation along the Northern Sea Route in 2024 is planned at 50 million tons.
