Pope Francis’ envoy Matteo Zuppi will visit Moscow on June 28 and 29. This was reported in the press service of the press of the Holy See.
“The main goal of the initiative is to encourage gestures of humanity that can help resolve the current tragic situation and find ways to achieve a just world,” the message says.
Zuppi’s plans to visit Moscow as the Pope’s envoy to resolve the conflict in Ukraine became known in early June. The head of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Russia, Archbishop Paolo Pezzi, said that Zuppi had received the Kremlin’s consent to visit Russia. On the same day, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reportedthat at that time the Vatican did not take any practical steps to organize his visit to Moscow, although it confirmed its intentions on May 20.
In early June, Zuppi visited Ukraine. On June 6, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had discussed humanitarian cooperation with the envoy as part of the implementation of the Ukrainian “peace formula”. Then Zelensky said that a ceasefire would not lead to the restoration of peace.
