The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, presented on September 30 a project for short-term financing of the US federal government, which was on the verge of a shutdown, transmits The Washington Post.
The document, if adopted, will allow the government to continue working for 45 days at the current level of spending. It would add funds for disaster relief in the United States, but not funds to support Ukraine, which the White House has requested.
As the publication notes, to adopt this project, McCarthy will need a two-thirds vote, which means the document will not pass without the support of the Democrats. McCarthy himself said that if US President Joe Biden orders his party members to vote against the project, then the “shutdown” will be on his conscience. Aid to Kyiv should not be included in the plan because it “already has $3 billion,” he added. Voting on the project should take place soon.
On September 27, Biden criticized McCarthy for allegedly not wanting to fulfill the terms of previous agreements with the White House on further government funding. Over the past two weeks, McCarthy has been trying to enlist the support of the far-right members of his party, who refused to vote for a short-term budget and demanded, among other things, spending cuts, the creation of a commission to discuss the problem of the national debt, etc.
In the document, senators proposed allocating $4.49 billion for short-term military assistance to Ukraine and another $1.65 billion in additional financial assistance instead of the $24 billion Biden requested from Congress in August.
House Republicans are proposing aggregate spending cuts of $60 billion (they did not affect defense spending and non-discretionary spending – spending items that are difficult to change: pensions and health insurance for veterans), while Democrats oppose cuts in such amounts. wrote “Vedomosti”.
