NYT: The US can force the EU to pay for American weapons intended for Kyiv
The New York Times, citing informed sources, reports that the United States is discussing the possibility of supplying arms to Ukraine amid the inability of Congress to agree on a bipartisan deal. It is noted that the American leadership is discussing a comprehensive arms exchange with third countries and the possibility of forcing European states to pay for American weapons and supply them to Kyiv.
According to the newspaper, a comprehensive arms exchange can be carried out by analogy with Japan and South Korea, which officially refused to supply weapons to Ukraine directly. At the same time, these states transferred it to the United States in order to compensate for the supply of weapons to Kyiv from American arsenals.
The publication’s information indicates that Washington recognizes that there is nothing on the horizon that could compare with the 60 billion euros in US assistance that cannot be agreed upon in Congress. The newspaper cites a statement from one of the European diplomats who wondered whether the United States is really ready to “defend every inch” of NATO territory if the Republicans are ready, at the request of the country’s ex-President Donald Trump, to vote against the continuation of assistance to Ukraine.
