The US State Department announced a meeting with the Ukrainian side to discuss security guarantees

Negotiations on security guarantees for Ukraine have begun, the US State Department said. writes TASS.

“Today, representatives of the State Department, the US Department of Defense and the National Security Council [Белого дома] met with Ukrainian colleagues to start bilateral negotiations on long-term security guarantees.

The main thing for the United States will be to provide Ukraine with “forces capable of defending it now <...> and in the future,” as well as support, “improving the efficiency and transparency of military institutions,” and helping to carry out reforms to move Kyiv “on the path to its Euro-Atlantic aspirations.”

On the evening of August 3, Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine informed on the start of negotiations with the United States on a bilateral agreement on the provision of security guarantees. “This is provided for by the joint declaration of support for Ukraine, agreed at the NATO summit in Vilnius, which is the basis for the development of relevant bilateral agreements,” he explained.

State Department announced the early start of the discussion on July 31. As noted by the head of the press service of the department Matthew Miller, we will talk about long-term obligations to provide security assistance to Kyiv, which are not related to current supplies.

At the Vilnius NATO summit in July, the member countries of the alliance agreed on the conditions for Ukraine’s entry into NATO. Kyiv will be sent an invitation to join after all the conditions are met and the unanimous consent of all members of the bloc is reached. At the same time, the terms of Ukraine’s entry into the organization were not called.
