According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), which cites unnamed sources, the Joseph Biden administration intends to impose new restrictions on the supply of US equipment and semiconductors for artificial intelligence (AI) to China. The possibility of a ban on the supply of cloud technologies that can be used for AI is also being studied.
The WSJ writes that these plans stem from US authorities’ fears that equipment from Nvidia and other chipmakers could be used in China for military purposes.
The US Department of Commerce, as well as Nvidia and AMD, have not yet commented on the possibility of introducing new restrictions. However, the market has already reacted to the reports: in over-the-counter trading, Nvidia shares fell by 4.2%, AMD – by 3.4%, Intel – by 1.2%.
Read about how the use of AI technologies exacerbates the rivalry between the United States and China in the publication “Kommersant” “Competition is getting smarter”.
