The initiative involves providing aid to Israel separately from funding to Ukraine. The package includes $4 billion for Israel’s Iron Dome and David’s Sling missile defense systems, as well as another $1.2 billion for the development of the Iron Beam missile defense system.
One of the authors of the bill is the new Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson. The Hill notes that this is his first initiative in his new position. Previously Johnson spoke against combining requests for military assistance to Israel and Ukraine.
October 20 US President Joe Biden requested Congress has allocated additional funding, aimed, among other things, at providing military assistance to Israel and Ukraine. The total amount of the request exceeds $106 billion. As Reuters noted, Biden included a request for aid to Israel to convince House Republicans of the need for additional funding for Ukraine.
