US congressmen agreed on temporary government funding – media
The leaders of both chambers of the American Congress agreed on a project to temporarily finance the government, which will avoid stopping its activities (shutdown), RIA Novosti reports, citing material from the Politico newspaper.
Thus, according to the agreement, for some federal departments funding will be extended until March 1, for others – until March 8. At the same time, a vote must also be held on this matter, which should take place next week.
Bloomberg previously reported that the United States began preparing for a shutdown – stopping government funding. The current funding agreement in Congress runs until January 20th. Democrats could not agree with Republicans on passing the budget, so the White House called on departments to prepare for a shutdown. Some departments may close from January 20, others from February 3.
According to Bloomberg, hardliners among Republicans in the House of Representatives did not approve of the agreement that was recently concluded by House Speaker Republican Mike Johnson and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer. Biden announced this agreement a week ago. But now opponents of the agreement are insisting on cutting government spending by at least $70 billion.
The Hill reported today that the conservative wing of the Republicans is talking about “overthrowing” Johnson from office if he puts the deal with the Democrats to a vote. They, in turn, promise the speaker not to vote for his resignation if he goes against the conservatives. There is also no progress on money for Ukraine – the Democrats refuse to agree to the Republicans’ conditions for the construction of a wall on the border with Mexico.
