US Archive: NATO Secretary General promised not to interfere in the affairs of Russia and the CIS

The public research organization “National Security Archive” at the George Washington University in the capital, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of NATO, published part of declassified US government documents relating to Russia and the CIS.

In particular, the documents contain a statement by ex-Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Manfred Werner from 1992, in which he announced the building of ties with Russia.

“Our common interest is that there is stability in Russia, because… it is good for Europe… NATO is interested in the prosperity of Russia… We do not intend to interfere in the internal affairs of Russia, nor in the internal affairs of others sovereign states – members of the CIS,” Werner stated in those years.
