The US and EU intend to cooperate with China in a number of areas, according to a statement released after the latest round of US-EU dialogue on China.
The talks were attended by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland and Secretary General of the EU External Relations Service Stefano Sannino.
“Deputy Secretary Nuland and Secretary General Sannino reaffirmed their willingness to continue engaging with China on areas of mutual interest and on issues for which China has a global responsibility,” the statement said.
The parties also expressed the need to adjust their engagement with China, given China’s recent moves on the world stage and the circumstances of the “broader geopolitical context.” However, they stressed the importance of maintaining open channels of communication with Beijing.
The statement also expresses concern about the use of economic coercion and threats that violate the rules of the international order and the multilateral trading system. The importance of responding to such actions from other partners was noted, in accordance with the agreement reached at the G7 summit in Hiroshima.
