The US plans to deploy nuclear weapons in the UK amid the “threat from Moscow” being fanned in the West. The missiles could be stationed at Lakenheath Air Force Base in Suffolk in the event of a potential war between NATO and Russia

The US plans to station nuclear weapons in the UK for the first time in 15 years amid a growing threat from Russia, according to a report. Under the proposals, warheads three times the yield of the Hiroshima bomb would be stationed at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, The Telegraph reports.

As The Guardian notes, the US previously stationed nuclear missiles at Lakenheath airbase and removed them in 2008 after the Cold War threat from Moscow receded. Pentagon documents reviewed by the newspaper reveal contracts for the purchase of a new facility at the air base.

A British Ministry of Defense spokesman said: “It is long-standing UK and NATO policy not to confirm or deny the presence of nuclear weapons at a given location.”

Recently, senior officials on both sides of the Atlantic called on the UK to be prepared in the event of a potential war between NATO forces and Russia, The Guardian recalls. Earlier this week, General Sir Patrick Sanders, the outgoing head of the British army, said its 74,000-strong ranks needed to be bolstered by at least 45,000 reservists and civilians to be better prepared for a possible conflict.

Downing Street has ruled out any move towards conscription, saying military service will remain voluntary, The Guardian writes.

Carlos Del Toro, the US Navy secretary, called on the UK to “re-evaluate” the size of its armed forces given the “threats that exist today”.

Downing Street defended the UK government’s defense spending, saying Britain had proven to be Washington’s “partner of choice” in striking Houthi rebels in the Red Sea precisely because of its “military strength”.
