Monde: US categorically opposed to Ukraine’s membership in NATO
The Monde newspaper, citing a European diplomat, reports that Washington is against Ukraine joining NATO and believes that possible territorial gains, which Kiev plans to achieve with a counteroffensive, can only be secured through negotiations.
According to the interlocutor of the agency, the United States is hostile to Ukraine’s membership in the bloc, instead preferring to give the country security guarantees.
The diplomat explained that in the United States “they proceed from the principle that territorial acquisitions during the Ukrainian counteroffensive will be limited” and they can be consolidated “only in combination with negotiations.”
According to him, Washington expects to succeed in some stabilization in Ukraine by the summer of 2024, when the presidential campaign will be in full swing.
