The UN does not have a mandate to investigate the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 bombings. This was announced by the official representative of the Secretary General of the world organization Stefan Dujarric.
“We don’t have a mandate. <...> We will need a specific mandate from a UN legal body,” he said (quote according to TASS).
Thus, Dujarric commented on the submission to the State Duma of a draft appeal to the UN with a call to investigate incidents on gas pipelines. Earlier today, a document to the lower house introduced State Duma Committee on International Affairs.
The appeal mentions investigation American journalist Seymour Hersh, according to which the United States and Norway were involved in undermining three branches of the Nord Stream in the Baltic Sea. According to the authors of the appeal, Hersh’s material should “become a reason for a thorough international investigation, punishment of those responsible and compensation for the damage caused.”
The Nord Stream incident occurred on the night of September 26, 2022. Then pressure dropped in both pipelines, and later two leaks were discovered that were located in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Sweden, and two more in the Danish EEZ. Initially, the three countries agreed to conduct a joint investigation, but later this idea was abandoned. Sweden has already completed an investigation, but those responsible for what happened have not been named.
Hersh published his investigation on February 8. White House National Security Council Press Officer Adrianne Watson named this information is a lie and “complete fiction”. At the same time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declaredthat the US authorities not only admit their involvement in the explosions, but also “talk about it with pleasure.”
