The UN was unable to establish the circumstances of the Il-76 crash with Ukrainian prisoners
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a statement following the investigation into the crash of an Il-76 aircraft with Ukrainian prisoners of war on board on January 24, 2024 over the Belgorod region.
The document notes that the international investigation failed to identify the circumstances that led to this tragedy.
“Russian authorities stated that the plane was shot down by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, resulting in the death of 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war. In the absence of access, OHCHR was unable to sufficiently establish the circumstances of the incident,” the UN said.
The department also calls for a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into this incident.
