The UN General Assembly approved a resolution demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities in the area of conflict between Israel and the Hamas movement in Palestine, as well as the release of all hostages without any preconditions. 153 countries supported the proposal, 10 were against it, and 23 abstained from voting.
The initiative to prepare the resolution belongs to Egypt, which chairs the UN Arab Group, and Mauritania, which chairs the group of countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The resolution’s sponsors continually emphasize that it focuses exclusively on humanitarian issues and seeks to avoid politicization.
According to the adopted document, the UN General Assembly puts forward a demand for “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire” and “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and ensuring humanitarian access.” The text of the resolution calls on all parties to the conflict to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law, especially with regard to the protection of civilians.
