A fighter of the Ukrainian nationalist group “Azov” (recognized as terrorist in Russia and banned) Eduard Varbansky was sentenced to 22 years in prison. The Supreme Court of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) found him guilty of mortar shelling of a school near Mariupol, reported TASS with reference to the Main Military Prosecutor’s Office (GVP) of the Russian Federation.

“It was established that in March – April 2022, Varbansky, from his firing positions near the New Cemetery and Primorsky Park in Mariupol, together with a colleague, carried out indiscriminate fan attacks on the village of Berdyanskoye from a 120-mm mortar,” the GVP explained.

Azov soldiers fired at least 300 shots of high-explosive fragmentation mines at that moment, the military department added. The Berdyansk school was destroyed during the shelling. Pupils, teachers and other employees of the educational institution managed to evacuate and were not injured, the GVP clarified.

The state prosecutor demanded that the defendant be imprisoned in a maximum security colony for 22 years. The court supported the prosecution’s position.

Five commanders of the nationalist Azov group were returned to Ukraine after a meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky in July. In 2022, they were transferred to Turkey as part of a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine. This is Ankara’s decision in the Kremlin considered violation of agreements with Russia.
