The Supreme Court upheld the refusal to rehabilitate the Soviet counterintelligence officer who defected to the CIA
The press service of the Supreme Court reported that the highest court confirmed the legality of the refusal to rehabilitate the Soviet counterintelligence officer and government security officer Pyotr Deryabin, who left the USSR and joined the CIA.
“The Supreme Court issued a ruling on satisfaction of the motion to refuse rehabilitation,” the RAPSI agency quotes the message of the Supreme Court.
In connection with the transition in 1954 to the side of the enemy and further active cooperation with the CIA, Deryabin was sentenced in absentia by the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR to the capital punishment in force at that time – the death penalty.
As recalled by the agency, during the war years Deryabin served in SMERSH, then in the NKVD, and even for some time he was the bodyguard of the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.
