In the early morning of October 7, Israel was subjected to a large-scale rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. After massive rocket attacks, fighters of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) penetrated into the border areas in southern Israel.

The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) announced the launch of Operation Iron Swords against the Palestinian movement in the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the nation, declaring that Israel is at war. It was announced that the mobilization of reservists had begun. Israeli soldiers are clearing populated areas.

The editor-in-chief of MK in Israel, Avraham Fishman, has lived in Israel for many years. Therefore, he gave his opinion on the reasons for the escalation of the decades-long Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

– Now you can hear that the Israeli army was not ready. She was ready,” says the journalist. – I’ll explain what’s the matter. Previous attempts to break through the border were always accompanied by information hype. Children and teenagers who tried to break through the border with flags were sent to the front rows, and journalists were always nearby at such moments. After each such event, footage of children “eager to fight against the Israeli military” was scattered in the world media. The last such attempts took place quite recently, at the end of September.

An order to open fire is a serious situation; a soldier cannot just open fire, especially on teenagers. I admit that this time there could have been some kind of preliminary psychological attack with children and women, and the soldiers could not open fire; We don’t know what happened before the cars with the militants broke through the border, we only see in the footage the breakthrough itself. We don’t know who approached the gate before this moment. After all, except for the Palestinians, no one filmed the beginning of the border breach.

At this moment – not only I, but all Israelis think so – they crossed all the red lines, broke through two boundaries – physical and psychological. Never before have all these symbolic launches of balloons and so on been accompanied by shooting. This is the main difference from previous clashes in Israel.

According to our interlocutor, of course, there was some relaxation of the Israeli military. It must be taken into account that it was early morning, the moment of shift change.

“As far as we know, the soldiers must be in protected premises, there are huge security towers there,” the journalist continues. – The footage shows that four soldiers, that is, the number of people on guard (usually two on the tower, two for backup) were shot right on the ground. What does this mean? Apparently, these are those who took turns, those who entered the tower. It was the moment of shift change; they did not have time to take guard duty.

Fishman agreed with some Russian military experts that what was also unexpected was that Hamas did not act in this case with its usual methods.

“This operation was not similar to the Hamas style or even the Hezbollah style,” continues MK’s interlocutor. “This was not a single terrorist attack or a massive shelling of Israeli territory, which they have been practicing for years. This was an operation of a completely different nature. And it almost completely, “copycat”, coincides with how the Armed Forces of Ukraine act in relation to the border regions of Russia. The same border breakthroughs, the same seizures of populated areas, intimidation of the population, hostage taking. It is possible that they were trained by the same specialists who trained Ukrainian soldiers for operations. Arab terrorist organizations do not operate this way. The participants were mercenary instructors who train neo-Nazi militants.

– How has your daily life changed these days, is there any panic among residents?

– By and large, nothing has changed among the civilian population. When the siren sounds, people go to bomb shelters. This happened all previous times. The rocket’s flight time to our city is one and a half minutes. When the siren sounds, people have a minute to find somewhere to hide. People already have experience and know what to do. If they are outside at this moment, then they go into the nearest house, where there is shelter on the lower floors or in the basement. There are shelters in every residential building, in every building. In private homes, people also create, as a rule, protected premises, bunkers.

It is still difficult to say whether there is destruction in our city; I have not heard about it. Judging by the video, there was great destruction in Ashkelon. There is panic among the population, of course. But the Israelis understand their responsibility; They understand that if they leave, it will be difficult for them to return. If a person is liable for military service, and he leaves the country without waiting for a summons, then he is subject to criminal prosecution. And this is regarded as betrayal.

– How often have sirens sounded in your city since Saturday?

– In our city it all started at 6:30 on Saturday. And they fired rockets non-stop from Gaza until lunchtime. It is known that they fired about 5 thousand missiles. Such activity, such massing had never been observed before. On the first day, the siren sounded every five minutes. If a person goes down to the shelter, he must remain there for at least 10 minutes. Usually, when two or three pops sound, it means that the missile has been shot down, and then you can leave.

It’s different in every locality; in ours today, October 9, there were no notifications yet. Now someone is at home, someone is at work.

The residents’ opinion is that today Israel has one goal: to put an end to what has been happening for many years. What has happened now is the crossing of all “red lines”.
