Foreign agents may participate in elections as candidates, the Ministry of Justice told RIA Novosti. At the same time, they are required to comply with the restrictions imposed on them by law: indicate their status in an application to the CEC, in campaign materials and in the voting room.

TV presenter Tatyana Lazareva, previously declared a foreign agent, announced plans with 44 more people to run for the Moscow City Duma this fall. According to the TV presenter, she wants to check whether the status of a foreign agent does not discriminate against people at all, as the Russian authorities say.

The Ministry of Justice advised foreign agents to study the federal laws “On the elections of the President of the Russian Federation”, “On the elections of deputies of the State Duma of the Russian Federation”, “On the basic guarantees of voting rights and the right to participate in a referendum of citizens of the Russian Federation”. The Ministry of Justice also noted that the passive electoral right of foreign agents is not limited by current legislation.
