In the construction sector in the Russian Federation, there is a shortage of about 5 million workers, said Vladimir Koshelev, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Construction and Housing and Public Utilities.
“The question has been raised more than once why a square meter is getting more expensive. I will answer right away – because of the imbalance of supply and demand. The record growth in housing construction, the growth in the volume of state orders for construction has led to the fact that developers are faced with a sharp shortage of materials, equipment, a shortage of five million workers, ”said the deputy (quote according to TASS).
According to Koshelev, last year there was a large increase in the cost of building materials, which also had a negative impact on the profitability of commissioning new buildings.
In June 2022, Deputy Minister of Construction and Housing and Utilities of Russia Nikita Stasishin noted that there was no longer a shortage of builders, and with the strengthening of the ruble, it became more profitable for migrant workers to work in Russia.
“If you look at the statistics, in the first five months of this year, more than 500,000 citizens entered Russia from the territory of Uzbekistan to work for hire. Taking into account the strengthening of the ruble, on the contrary, today it is profitable for labor migrants to work with us,” he noted.
In 2021, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Marat Khusnullin reported that the shortage of labor resources at construction sites in Russia reached 1.5-2 million people.
