The State Duma proposed not to interfere in the status of a military special operation

The current status of a military special operation in Ukraine allows the Russian side to carry out “all tasks,” Dmitry Sablin, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Defense, told Vedomosti (United Russia). “It seems to me that the current status is enough for now, this is my opinion. In general, this [изменение статуса СВО] is the prerogative of the head of state, not the State Duma,” he said.

Earlier on January 26, Crimean MP Mikhail Sheremet (United Russia) offered change the status of the SVO in connection with the supply of tanks by a number of countries to Ukraine. He did not specify what status he meant. “NATO, represented by the United States, is raising the stakes on Ukraine, throwing the Ukrainian people into the millstones of war. I believe that today it is worth discussing the issue of changing the status of the special operation in Ukraine, taking into account the new challenges facing our country. The ongoing events have already gone beyond the usual military conflict,” Sheremet said.

According to him, changing the status of the NMD will allow the country’s economy to be transferred to a military footing and mobilize all resources “for a common victory.” This issue is not on the agenda in the Kremlin, informed Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, reacting to Sheremet’s speech.

When assessing the status of the SVO, it is necessary to be guided by the existing system of power and division of competencies, believes Dmitry Novikov (KPRF), First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs. “Sheremet’s colleague is a State Duma deputy and has the right to introduce various initiatives at the parliamentary level, but I would suggest that everyone who has such initiatives should be guided by the legislative norms existing in our country,” he told Vedomosti.

Novikov added that the decision on the status of hostilities in Ukraine was “motivated and reasoned in a certain way” and suggested that the positions of the president, government and the Ministry of Defense be guided. “People who are competent to make this decision have a lot of sources of information, professional consultants,” he added.

Another State Duma deputy from Crimea, Leonid Ivlev (United Russia), also noted that the decision to change the status of the NWO should not be made by the parliament. “I would like these issues to be decided by the General Staff and the Supreme Commander,” he said.

Formerly Sheremet allowed expansion of the borders of the NWO due to the intervention of the West. He noted that Russia did not seek to escalate the conflict, but the “US-persecuted” countries crossed the red lines and now pose a threat to Russia’s national interests. “The more Western countries interfere in the affairs of Ukraine, the further the border of our special operation will spread in order to create a buffer zone and protect our country from an enemy neighborhood,” the deputy said on January 22.
