The head of the State Duma Committee on the Arctic, Nikolai Kharitonov, said that the expansion by the United States of America of its own part of the continental shelf in the Arctic is unacceptable.
He clarified that such actions could lead to increased tension in the region.
“The expansion of borders in the Arctic unilaterally is unacceptable. It could lead to increased tension,” Kharitonov noted.
According to him, first it is necessary to prove the geopolitical affiliation of these territories, as representatives of Russia previously did. He added that then the scientific apparatus descended under water and conducted a study of the subsoil. As a result, an evidence base was collected and Russia’s application for the shelf was considered by a UN subcommittee.
