State Department: US authorities consider elections in Belarus fictitious
US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller statedthat Washington does not consider the parliamentary and local elections held in Belarus to be legitimate.
A document published on the State Department website claims that not a single electoral process can be called democratic in a country where “more than 1,400 political prisoners are being held.”
“All independent political figures were either detained or exiled. All independent political parties were denied registration. Belarusians abroad could vote only if they returned to Minsk, where they would likely be subject to reprisals. These abuses effectively froze the genuine political discourse within Belarus,” Miller said.
He also added that representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe were not able to observe the elections.
