The majority of the deputies of the Legislative Assembly of the Irkutsk region voted for the early deprivation of the mandate of communist parliamentarian Andrey Levchenko, who was convicted of fraud with elevators. The son of the former governor of the Angara region, being a deputy, served as head of the Communist Party faction in the Legislative Assembly.
26 out of 38 deputies voted for the early termination of the powers of Andrey Levchenko from May 17 this year, 7 against, 3 abstained and 2 more did not vote. At a meeting of the regional parliament, Sergei Brenyuk read Andrey Levchenko’s appeal to the deputies, in which he stressed that he had not committed any crimes, he called the criminal cases absurd and linked the verdict to the political persecution of his father. He called the deprivation of his mandate hasty and illegal.
In turn, the deputy prosecutor of the Irkutsk region, Lyubov Isakanova, noted that the deprivation of Andrey Levchenko’s powers is completely legal, as is the criminal case initiated against him. Also, the representative of the supervisory authority stated that the conditional early release of the person involved in the criminal case is not a basis for continuing deputy activities.
Earlier, Andrei Levchenko was sentenced to nine years in prison for receiving illegal income of 1 billion rubles. when installing elevators in July 2022. In March of this year, his sentence was reduced to six years in prison. Last week, at the request, he was released on parole.
