The son of former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan, Levon, was released from arrest after receiving a mandate as a deputy of the republic’s parliament. About it reported News.am edition.

“Do you know how many other people are in prison on trumped-up and stupid charges. I am one of them and I hope that they will all be free soon,” Levon Kocharyan said after his release.

He clarified that his conditions of detention were “ordinary, like everyone else’s.” Kocharyan promised to answer questions about working as a politician after receiving a deputy mandate later.

Kocharyan received the mandate of a deputy of the National Assembly of Armenia from the Hayastan faction on November 6, CEC Chairman Vahagn Hovakimyan previously said.

On September 22, Kocharyan was detained after protests in Yerevan against the backdrop of the start of Azerbaijan’s “anti-terrorist measures” in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to media reports, during his arrest he was beaten by Yerevan police officers, after which he was hospitalized. The court arrested Kocharyan on suspicion of beating four police officers.

His group of lawyers stated that Kocharyan would be released from arrest, since after receiving his mandate he acquired parliamentary immunity. When asked that the Prosecutor General could petition parliament to revoke his parliamentary immunity, Kocharyan replied that “these authorities are capable of anything.”
