The Seimas of Lithuania adopted a law on national sanctions, which provides for prohibitions and restrictions for citizens of Russia and Belarus, despite the veto of the country’s President Gitanas Nausėda, writes Delfi.
99 deputies voted for the bill in its original version, and not in the one proposed by the president, seven voted against, two abstained. Nausėda has previously pointed out that from the point of view of Lithuanian national security, there are no grounds for a different assessment of the citizens of Russia and Belarus.
According to the document, Russian citizens and legal entities will actually be prohibited from acquiring real estate in Lithuania if they are not residents of the country. For citizens of Belarus, the opportunity to buy real estate was left.
The law will be valid for a year with the possibility of extension. The document actually calls the Russians and Belarusians responsible for the Ukrainian conflict. Therefore, those who already have a residence permit and permanent residence (permanent residence) in Lithuania, as well as those who inherit this property, will be able to purchase real estate. Russians can obtain a residence permit if the decision on this is made at the government level or in a situation where a Russian has a Lithuanian Schengen visa or a residence permit in any EU country.
