Deputies of the Sejm (parliament) of Latvia approved in the first reading a bill on the confiscation of cars with Russian license plates if they are not registered in the republic or taken out of the country within three months from the date the law comes into force. About it reported on the Sejm website.

“If after this period it is discovered that a Russian car, unregistered in Latvia, has been used in road traffic, it will be arrested and confiscated. The confiscated equipment is planned to be transferred to Ukraine,” the message says.

Cars with Russian license plates are only allowed to be used for transit through the territory of Latvia. In this case, information about the car will need to be provided through a special portal, and it will be necessary to leave the territory of the republic within 24 hours.

On September 12, Latvia and Lithuania stopped allowing cars with Russian license plates through. On September 13, Estonia introduced a similar ban (making an exception for buses, motorcycles and diplomats’ cars), and on September 15, Finland. Poland was the last to join the restrictions – on September 17. Thus, all EU border countries have closed the entry of Russians by car.

The introduction of official bans on the entry of Russian cars began after on September 8, the European Commission clarified the rules for applying existing sanctions, indicating that entry into the EU countries on personal cars (customs code 8703 – cars for transporting less than 10 people) registered in the Russian Federation will be regarded as a prohibited import.

On September 12, the EC added that Russian cars can be used to circumvent sanctions, which explains the increased attention to them.
