The Russian stock market grew by 43.87% over the year – Kommersant

Moscow Exchange Index (MOEX: IMOEX), which includes the most liquid shares of the 50 largest and most dynamically developing Russian issuers, rose by 43.87% in 2023 – from 2154.12 points to 3,099.11 points. The highest index value for the year was 3287.34 points. The RTS Index (RTSI) over 12 months rose from 970.6 to 1083.48 points, by 11.63%. The maximum RTSI value for the year is 1159.55 points, as follows from Moscow Exchange data.
On December 29, the last working day of the Moscow Exchange this year, IMOEX fell by 0.09%, RTSI by 0.7%. In 2023, the dollar on the Moscow Exchange rose in price by 20.29 rubles, the euro – by 24.82 rubles.

Since the beginning of autumn, the Moscow Exchange index began to gradually decline. By the end of December the decline was 5%. This, coupled with the Central Bank’s increase in the key rate in December to 16%, led to Russian investors beginning to withdraw money from equity funds. According to Kommersant’s estimates, based on data from Investfunds, over the three weeks of December they withdrew 1.45 billion rubles from the ten largest equity funds by assets (which account for almost 60% of all assets of funds in this category), which is comparable to the volume of funds released in November.
