NATO’s actions in the Arctic will escalate the situation, Nikolai Korchunov, Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in an interview with TASS.
According to him, at present there are no signs of improvement in the military security situation in the Arctic, but the continued expansion of NATO into the region is obvious.
“The scale of the military exercises of the alliance held there is increasing, in which its non-Arctic member countries are actively involved. Their military potential is being built up in high latitudes,” Korchunov said.
He also noted that Moscow may consider withdrawing from the Arctic Council. According to Korchunov, this will be possible if Western countries behave destructively and violate the rights of Russia.
