The Russian Foreign Ministry has summoned Norwegian Ambassador to Moscow Robert Kvile amid detentions and trials against Russians over the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, the press service of the foreign ministry reports.
“Noted that the sentences against the Russians are politically motivated and have nothing to do with the principles of fair and unbiased justice,” the statement said.
The Foreign Ministry also called on Oslo to stop persecuting Russians on ethnic grounds. “They called on the Norwegian authorities to abandon such Russophobic actions and the persecution of Russian citizens on the basis of nationality,” the ministry added.
In October, the Norwegian security service detained several people on suspicion of espionage and illegal filming with drones and photographic equipment. They were arrested after they were seen taking pictures of objects that are subject to a photography ban. We are talking about the coast guard base in Sortland.
Earlier in November, the prosecutor’s office of the kingdom charged businessman Andrey Yakunin, the son of the former head of the Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin, for using the drone on the territory of the kingdom. The indictment states that the businessman was in Svalbard between August 3 and September 6 of this year and repeatedly flew a drone during this period of time.
