The Russian Foreign Ministry opposed the withdrawal from the WTO

“The position of relevant departments, in particular the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is well known: the WTO remains an important platform for defending Russian interests in the global trading system, and withdrawal from it would be a gift for our enemies,” the statement says. The ministry noted that this issue is still being discussed in connection with the initiatives of a number of deputies.
The Ministry of Economics still believes that it is more profitable for Russia to remain in the WTO than to leave the association, Deputy Minister Vladimir Ilyichev told Vedomosti in October 2022. On this platform, a dialogue is being held not only with unfriendly countries, but also with those who did not support sanctions, for example, with China, India and Brazil.
Using the WTO to resolve disputes is now extremely difficult, he admitted. But at the moment, according to Ilyichev, there are no alternative international platforms for sanctions proceedings.
Russia signed the WTO accession protocol in April 1994 and joined it in August 2012.
