The Russian Foreign Ministry protested to the Ambassador of Cyprus, Kipros Yorgallis, in connection with the provocation of the authorities against Rossiyskaya Gazeta correspondent Alexander Gasyuk and embassy employee Doinikov. About it reported Russian foreign policy agency.

The Ambassador of Cyprus was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and expressed a categorical protest in connection with the unacceptable and provocative actions of the country’s authorities against Gasyuk, who was accredited in Nicosia, as well as embassy employee Doinikov while performing his official duties.

The Cypriot administration demanded the immediate release of the Russian correspondent, an explanation about the incident and an official apology.

The Foreign Ministry said that on October 5, Cypriot intelligence services tried to detain Gasyuk “using brute force” for subsequent expulsion on charges of “threat to national security.” Doinikov, who was nearby, was injured, and Gasyuk himself was arrested with a serious arm injury.

The department called the accusations against Gasyuk far-fetched, and the actions of the Cypriot security forces as demonstratively provocative and harsh.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus did not even bother to respond to timely relevant requests from our embassy in Nicosia. Instead, psychological pressure was first used, including on the journalist’s family, and it all ended in physical violence,” the Russian Foreign Ministry added.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation called Ambassador of Cyprus due to the detention of a Russian journalist about six hours ago. Then it was reported that Gasyuk was in the hospital.
