The Russian Foreign Ministry called the burning of the Koran in Sweden a shameful act of Islamophobia

Gennady Askaldovich, Special Representative of the Russian Foreign Minister for cooperation in the field of observance of the right to freedom of religion, Ambassador-at-Large of the Foreign Ministry on Thursday, June 29, commented on the action with the public burning of the Koran in Stockholm, which took place on June 28.
The diplomat pointed out that this “flagrant act against Islam” was committed on the main Muslim holiday – Eid al-Adha. At the same time, the law enforcement agencies of Stockholm coordinated this action and provided the organizers and the performer with security.
Moscow rejects such pandering to religious radicals on the part of official Stockholm, considering arguments about freedom of speech and democracy only a cover for provocation.
Askaldovich also called on the world to work together to counter such shameful violations of the rights of believers, warning that impunity in such cases could lead to unpredictable catastrophic consequences.
This is not the first time that a public action with the burning of the Koran took place in Stockholm. The Swedish authorities see this as a realization of the right to freedom of expression. At the same time, Prime Minister of the Kingdom Ulf Hjalmar Kristersson said that the approval of the Swedish police to set fire to the Koran in Stockholm can be considered legal but inappropriate. According to the politician, “we live in a time when it is necessary to remain calm and think about what is best for Sweden’s long-term interests.”
The protest came after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday that Sweden had made some progress, but not enough. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan strongly condemned the “heinous protest” against the holy book of Muslims, which was also implemented on the first day of Eid al-Adha. He stressed that “it is unacceptable to allow anti-Islamic protests in the name of freedom of expression.”
