Russia would like to move the UN headquarters from New York to a “more neutral point” – for example, to Vienna or Geneva. Such a statement did in a conversation with TASS, Director of the Department of International Organizations of the Russian Foreign Ministry Petr Ilyichev.
“We would, of course, prefer to move it [штаб-квартиру ООН] somewhere to another more neutral point, Geneva or Vienna,” he said.
The diplomat said that Moscow is “thinking about it” because the Swiss and Austrian authorities are “more neutral, even despite what they are doing now.” However, the initiative of the Russian side is not supported by the majority of other member states.
Ilyichev explained that this issue is complicated due to financial and economic issues. According to him, many member states do not want to leave New York, because they already have real estate in the United States. “It’s hard for them to have two representations,” he said.
The UN headquarters is located in New York. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is located in Geneva, and the IAEA, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and others are located in Vienna.
Earlier today, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived at the UN Headquarters to take part in the meetings of the Security Council as chairman, which will be held on April 25 and 26.
Lavrov’s trip to New York was complicated by the US delay in issuing visas to the Russian delegation. The fact that the Russian minister and other diplomats received documents from the Russian Foreign Ministry reported April 17 only. At the same time, Russian journalists were unable to obtain visas on time. The day before, on April 23, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the Russian journalists who arrived at the airport did not receive American visas. In this regard, Lavrov named US behavior is ugly and accused Washington of cowardice.
