Moscow expressed a diplomatic demarche to Baku due to the statement of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry about elections in new regions of Russia. This was announced by official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova at a briefing within the framework of the Eastern Economic Forum (WEF).
September 9, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan statedthat the elections that took place in new regions of Russia supposedly have no legal force.
“These are unacceptable assessments, and they are not consistent with the allied level of relations between our countries. Therefore, a diplomatic demarche was carried out in front of the Azerbaijani side,” explained the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Zakharova emphasized that the Foreign Ministry proceeds from the fact that Baku should treat the issue of Russia’s territorial integrity with the same respect that partners count on when it comes to the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions showed one of the highest turnouts in regional elections. At the same time, a martial law regime is in effect in the territories of the new regions. It was introduced immediately after joining Russia in the fall of 2022.
