Goalkeeper coach Vitaly Kafanov told RIA Novosti why he did not call the player of the Norwegian club Bodø-Glimt Nikita Khaikin to train with the Russian national team.
On November 20, a friendly football match between the national teams of Russia and Cuba is planned in Volgograd. Russian football players traditionally gather at a base in Novogorsk near Moscow.
According to Kafanov, Khaikin could lose his job if he comes to Russia, and he would not want to risk the career of a 28-year-old athlete.
The mentor emphasized that the Norwegian club does not prohibit Khaikin from playing for the national team, and the goalkeeper himself is not against it.
Nikita Khaikin was born on July 11, 1995 in the Israeli city of Netanya; two years later the family moved to Russia. The father is Russian businessman Ilya Khaikin, against whom a criminal case was opened in 2003 on charges of illegal appropriation of land and agricultural enterprises in the Moscow region. He fled to the UK, where he received political asylum.
On March 13, 2019, Nikita Khaikin signed a contract with the Norwegian club Bodø-Glimt. Became a two-time champion of Norway with the club (2020, 2021). In January 2023, he signed a contract until the end of the season with Bristol City, playing in the top division of the English Football League. At the end of March, having not played a single match for Bristol, he decided to return to Bodø-Glimt.
