The Russian Embassy in Cyprus will soon begin providing consular services to Russians in the north of the island, informed TASS with reference to the representative of the diplomatic mission.

“We will start providing consular services in the northern part of the city of Nicosia in the very near future. The work will be carried out on a regular basis,” he said.

The diplomat added at the same time that in the north of Cyprus, where about 50,000 Russians live, there are representative offices of the United States, Great Britain and the EU countries.

Since 1974, Cyprus has been actually divided into two equal parts: the north of the island is controlled by the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), the south is the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus, inhabited by Greeks. Greece stands for the unification of the island and insists on the withdrawal of Turkish troops from the island. In the north of the island, 11 Turkish army corps, numbering 40,000 people, are deployed under the pretext of protecting the local Turkish population after Greek-Turkish ethnic clashes. In total, the Turkish army controls about 40% of the island.

Turkey, on the other hand, refuses to comply with the demands of Greece and advocates for the international recognition of the TRNC as an independent state.
