The withdrawal of invitations to Russian and Belarusian diplomats to the celebrations in honor of the liberation of Austria from Nazism is unacceptable. This was stated by Russian Ambassador to Vienna Dmitry Lyubinsky to OÖNachrichten, his words led press service of the diplomatic mission.
“Solutions <...> on the withdrawal of invitations to the delegations of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus to official celebrations on the occasion of the liberation of Austria and Europe from Nazism, we consider them unacceptable and shameful in the light of the culture of the historical memory of the Alpine Republic that we previously valued and highly valued,” said Lyubinsky.
The ambassador assured that Russian diplomats would still honor the memory of those who died in the liberation of Austria, but they would do it unofficially.
“The decision to sacrifice such a meticulous work on one’s own modern history [Австрии] for the sake of the momentary political situation, it seems thoughtless and short-sighted,” the ambassador emphasized.
The Russian delegation was not allowed to attend official wreath-laying events before. February 23 Lyubinsky toldthat members of the delegation at the session of the Parliamentary Assembly (PA) of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna were not allowed to lay flowers at the monument to Soviet soldiers-liberators.
Then Lyubinsky clarified that despite the denial of admission, the heads of the Russian diplomatic missions in Vienna laid two wreaths at the monument at once: one from themselves, and the second from the delegation of the Federal Assembly.
