Books in Russia have risen in price by 15-20% over the year, the Russian Book Union reported “Izvestia”. The association expects that by the end of 2023, growth will be 10-15%. Rosstat estimates the increase in prices for the year at 7.4%, but it takes into account only the fiction segment.
The Russian Book Union reported that in the first quarter of 2023, the cost growth was 5%. The association believes that the reasons were the growth of the exchange rate, expensive logistics from China and Asian countries, the rise in the price of equipment from Europe, and the increase in prices by domestic paper producers. The sellers of the Chitay-Gorod and Book Labyrinth stores estimated the rise in price at 5–6% since the beginning of the year.
Mintsifra reported that it monitors the situation in the book market. In 2022, an interdepartmental working group was established to monitor and promptly make decisions to prevent unjustified growth in paper prices. According to the department, this allowed to keep prices for scarce grades of paper at a level not exceeding inflation.
