Russian Ambassador to the Vatican Alexander Avdeev conveyed a protest over the statements of the Pope of Rome about atrocities attributed to Russian military personnel, Chechens and Buryats.

“On the evening of November 28, I made a presentation to the leadership of the diplomatic service of the Vatican. The Russian side is outraged by the allegations of atrocities committed by Russian military personnel during the NMD in Ukraine,” the diplomat said (quote according to TASS).

The Pope, earlier commenting on the conflict in Ukraine, declared, which considers the Chechens and Buryats the most “cruel part of the Russian troops.” “If there are people who are martyrs, then there must be those who torture them,” he added.

In response to this, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova notedthat his statements demonstrate not just Russophobia, but also an outrageous perversion of the truth. “This is no longer Russophobia, this is a perversion, I don’t even know what level,” she noted.

At the same time, in early November, Francis named the Russian people are great and declared that because of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, they are between two peoples that they love. The Pope noted that the Russian people are a great people and they are struck by “cruelty, which is not characteristic of the Russian people.”
