“There is a real housing crisis in Strasbourg at the moment, and more and more students for a declining number of housing units this year, due to the renovations of the Cités U”, explains Romuald Ladwein, the president of Afges, citing, among the difficult cases, that of a student living with his family in a campsite on the outskirts of Strasbourg, while waiting to find a room to rent.

In its 2022 survey on the cost of student living, the National Union of Students of France (UNEF) emphasized this “significant tension” student housing, including “a strong demand linked to the total face-to-face return to establishments”. According to real estate professionals, it is more broadly the entire rental market that is currently going through a period of low water. The classifieds site Leboncoin notes that “the volume of new properties for rent is at its lowest in August 2022 versus 2021, with −10% new deposits in the rental category”. The decline appears to be more marked in Ile-de-France, with “approximately − 16% of new listings of properties for rent in August”.
